Alaskan Malamute Rehoming & Adoption              Dogs for Adoption

The Alaskan Malamute Club, Victoria receives many calls from people who can no longer keep their Alaskan Malamute for one reason or another.  Our club's Referral Service has been set up to help put those who wish to adopt a Malamute in touch with those who are seeking a new home for their dog.

Please note that Alaskan Malamutes that are referred via the Alaskan Malamute Club Referral Service are in no way vetted by us for suitability, and the AMCV is in no way endorsing or recommending these Malamutes as being suitable for you.  This is for you to determine.

Adopting a Malamute:

Before deciding to adopt a Malamute we ask that you read the information about the breed elsewhere on this website so that you are fully aware of the nature and temperament of the Alaskan Malamute breed and know what to expect.  You are welcome at any time to contact the club for advice and become involved in club activities with your new Malamute.

A list of Malamutes that have been referred to us to assist with finding a new home is available on the Referral List page. To register your interest in adopting a Malamute, or for further information about the Malamutes on the list, please contact the AMCV Referral Officer on (03) 9714 8540 (ask for Ralph or Sandy)

Referring a Malamute:

In order to register your Malamute on our Referral Listing, we require you to complete and sign the Alaskan Malamute Referral form and return it to us.  Your Malamute will then be placed on our list which is referred to people who contact our club seeking to adopt an Alaskan Malamute - note that "adopt" does not mean "buy", however the owner may wish to recoup some minor costs. Please note that callers who are referred to you via the Alaskan Malamute Club Referral Service are in no way vetted by us for suitability, and the AMCV is in no way endorsing or recommending these people as suitable owners for your Malamute.  This is for you to determine.

The limit of the involvement of the Alaskan Malamute Club, Victoria, is to pass on contact details of people with Malamutes needing new homes to people who are seeking to adopt a Malamute.  What subsequently transpires between the two parties is beyond the control and involvement of the AMCV.

As well as registering your dog with our Referral Service, we advise that you take the following steps to find a new home for your dog:

1.     Seek a new home amongst your friends and relatives.

2.     Contact the breeder of your Alaskan Malamute and ask for their assistance in seeking a suitable new home.

3.     Place advertisements in newspapers such as the Herald-Sun or Trading Post

If you cannot find a GOOD home for your Alaskan Malamute and have exhausted all possible avenues to do so, the kindest thing may be to have your dog put to sleep.  This is a far better outcome, and often less traumatic for the dog, than having him/her go to an unsuitable home or to a situation where he/she is neglected or abused.  Please consider carefully and do what you feel is kindest and in the best interests of your Malamute.

Referral Service Guidelines:

The dogs to be placed on the Referral Service are to be Alaskan Malamutes (to the best of the owner's knowledge).  Cross-breeds or other breeds are not eligible to use this service.

  • The Malamute Referral Service will not knowingly be involved in referral of Malamutes being sold for profit by the original owner.

  • The Malamute Referral Service will not knowingly be involved in finding temporary homes for Malamutes.

  • The Malamute Referral Service will not knowingly assist in the rehousing of dogs which have shown aggression towards people.

  • The Malamute Referral Service will not knowingly assist in the adoption of an unregistered Malamute for the purpose of breeding.

It must always be emphasised that the dogs referred via the AMCV are in no way assessed or recommended by the AMCV.

If you would like further information about adopting a Malamute via the AMCV Referral Service, please email the AMCV or phone our club's Malamute Referral Officer, via the Committee Contact Info link.
